The TIE/ln starfighter, simply known as the TIE Fighter, was the standard Imperial starfighter seen in massive numbers throughout the Galactic Civil War. The basic TIE/ln fighter inspired a number of other Imperial starfighters manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems, which became collectively known as the TIE series.
The TIE/ln, a descendant of the T.I.E. starfighter and the V-wing, both developed for the Galactic Republic, was manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems. Its design was inspired from Scimitar and the Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor.
The TIE/ln's engine was the most precisely manufactured propulsion system in the Galaxy, and with no moving parts, was low-maintenance. The lack of combat shields, hyperdrive, and life-support systems, in concert with the advanced engine design, reduced the mass of the fighter and confered exceptional maneuverability.
Primary armament was a pair of powerful laser cannons. These cannons were relatively powerful, and a well-placed hit on a starfighter or medium transport could damage or destroy it. It did not carry missile tubes, but such weapons could be added on if necessary.
Due to the lack of life-support systems, each TIE pilot had a fully-sealed flight suit superior to their Rebel counterparts. The absence of a hyperdrive also rendered the fighter totally dependent on carrier ships when deployed in enemy systems. TIE/lns also lack landing gear, another mass-reducing measure. While the ships were structurally capable of "sitting" on their wings, they were not designed to land or disembark their pilots without special support.
TIEs were designed to attack in large numbers, overwhelming the enemy craft. The Imperials used so many that they came to be considered symbols of the Empire and its might. They were also very cheap to produce, reflecting the Imperial philosophy of quantity over quality.
Contrary to popular belief, the ships did possess ejection seats, but the nature of space warfare often resulted in pilots riding their craft down to a swift end rather than ejecting and risking slow death by heat loss and oxygen starvation in the vacuum of space.
The design choices of the TIE/ln could arguably be explained by Imperial military philosophy, which viewed the starfighters and their pilots as an expendable asset. Though Imperial pilots were of an elite stock, they also considered themselves expendable, in accordance with their ideological training.
Like stormtroopers, TIE pilots had their own identification, such as DS-61-2 (the first two letters indicated the posting, the next two or three digits indicated the squadron number, and the last number indicated the pilot's ranking in the squadron). This procedure reduced them to being no more than anonymous and standardized operatives of the Imperial war machine. This attitude was further reflected by the lack of any sentimental attachment to particular TIEs by TIE pilots. As far as they were concerned, every fighter, whether reconditioned or factory-fresh, was identical.
TIE/In Interceptor
Length 9.6 meters
Maximum speed (atmosphere) 1,250 km/h
Engine unit: Twin Ion Engines.
Hyperdrive: None (can be fitted with one)
Shielding: None
Hull: Titanium alloy hull (20 RU)
Armament: 4 SFS Laser Cannons.
Crew: Pilot
Cargo capacity: 75 kilograms
The TIE/In starfighter, or TIE Interceptor, was an improved version of the TIE/ln starfighter. It was identifiable by its arrow-shaped radiator panels, as distinct from the hexagonal ones on the TIE Fighter. It was one of the fastest starfighters in the Galaxy at its prime, rivaling or surpassing the Alliance's RZ-1 A-wing interceptor.
Like its predecessor, the TIE Fighter, the TIE Interceptor carried no shielding but had superb acceleration and maneuverability. Improved avionics were implemented and the radiator panels had a cut-out notch to improve lateral visibility.
The original production variant had six laser cannons, one mounted on each wingtip and two under the thingypit canopy, though some have hypothesized the existence of a version with ten cannons, including an additional cannon mounted at the end of each wingtip and two more in the empty command pod hardpoints, much like the original TIE Fighter.
TIE/sa Bomber
Length 7.8 meters
Maximum speed: 850 km/h
Engine: Twin SFS ion engines
Hyperdrive system: None
Shielding: None
Hull: Titanium alloy hull with quadanium steel armor (50 RU)
Armament: 2 SFS laser cannons (2)
2 SFS warhead launchers, 4 torpedos, 6 concussion missiles each
Bomb Bay: 15 Tonnes of assorted munitions.
Crew: Pilot
Cargo capacity: 15 tonnes in bomb bay
The TIE/sa Bomber, more commonly known as simply the TIE Bomber, was a larger, less maneuverable TIE starfighter used for destroying large starships and pinpoint precision bombing.
The TIE Bomber was capable of carrying one of the following payloads: eight heavy rockets, six orbital mines, eight proton torpedoes (normally modified to hold twelve), eight proton bombs, four space bombs, sixty-four thermal detonators, or thousands of propaganda pamphlets.
The bomber was slower and less maneuverable than the original TIE/ln starfighter though it did partly compensate by having a stronger hull. Despite its agility, its lack of shielding meant it had to be escorted to target by starfighters.
The TIE Bomber had two hulls next to each other; one carried the pilot and the other carried a universal warhead launcher, enabling them to carry a variety of weapons tailored for the mission. The bomber was much more heavily built-up than the "fighter"-series of TIEs; it carried more sophisticated sensors to penetrate capital ship jamming and SFS P-s4 twin ion engines powered by a SFS I-a2b Ionization Reactor to allow a full payload to be carried at a reasonable speed. Due to their distinctive shape, TIE Bombers came to be referred to occasionally as dupes by enemy pilots.
TIE/ad Avenger:
Length 9.8 meters
Speed: 1,550 km/h
Engine: SFS twin ion engines
Hyperdrive: SFS ND9 hyperdrive.
Shielding: Novaldex shields (100 SBD)
Hull: Titanium alloy hull (20 RU)
Armament: 4 SFS laser cannons
2 SFS warhead launchers, 4 concussion missiles each
Crew: Pilot
Cargo Capacity: 125 kilograms.
The TIE Advanced x7, also known as the TIE/Ad Defender prototype, was a prototype for the TIE/D Defender developed at Sienar Fleet Systems' Advanced Research Division on Corulag.
Intended only to serve as a testbed for the Defender's drive system and primary weapon targeting system, The TIE/Ad x7 lacked the ion cannons and missile launchers that were implemented on the eventual TIE Defender design. Nevertheless, decades of experience and advances in TIE technology went in to the construction, resulting in a starfighter that was a radical departure from previous models in terms of appearance and performance.
The Advanced x7 featured three solar panels arranged around the spherical, central cockpit, which gave a large boost to the ship's power plant, allowing the ion engines to achieve speeds only previously possible in a light interceptor model. Additionally, triple arrays of maneuvering jets mounted on the solar collectors gave the starfighter a high level of agility in flight and combat.
The TIE/Ad x7 was one of the last TIE prototypes developed prior to the fall of the Galactic Empire, while it was a testbed for the defender, it is regarded by many, (most improtantly commander Marek Steele) to be more manueverable and ruggeder than the Tie/D
TIE/d Defender:
Length 9.2 meters
Maximum speed: 1,650 km/h
Engine: SFS twin ion engines.
Hyperdrive: SFS ND9 hyperdrive motivator
Shielding: Novaldex shields (200 SBD)
Hull Titanium alloy hull (15 RU)
Armament: 4 SFS laser cannons
2 Bortel ion cannons
2 SFS warhead launchers (4 concussion missiles or 3 proton torpedos)
1 Tractor beam projector
Crew: Pilot
Cargo: 65 kilograms
The high success rate of Rebel starfighters versus standard Imperial TIE/ln starfighters caused the Imperial Navy to rethink its doctrine of swarms of cheap craft vs. fewer high-quality ones. This interpretation might have been Rebel propaganda; several shielded Imperial starfighters existed before the introduction of the TIE Defender, though they also saw limited service; examples include the TIE Advanced x1, the TIE/ad starfighter, the assault gunboat, and the Skipray Blastboat.
Unlike standard TIE series craft, the TIE Defender possessed a Novaldex shield generator and a hyperdrive. It carried a formidable array of weaponry, with four laser cannons, two ion cannons, and two warhead launchers each capable of holding four missiles. A small tractor beam projector could also be equipped, and models produced by Ysanne Isard's Defender production facility regularly carried them.
The Defender's triple wing design and powerful engines made the craft faster and more agile than any other starfighter in Imperial service. It was also very expensive, at five times the cost of a standard TIE fighter. Even an organization as wealthy as the Imperial Navy chose not to mass-deploy such a fighter (or even the inferior TIE Avenger), so only elite pilots flew them.
The TIE Defender was in many ways far superior to any other starfighter of the time, having the advantage against the X-wing and perhaps all other Rebel craft (even the A-wing's speed) in every respect, exceeding the X-wing's armament with its two ion cannons and two missile launchers with an increased capacity.
The original TIE Defender project was supervised by the treacherous Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin. However, whenever he attempted to attack the Emperor, his own starfighters were used against him.
Alpha Star Wing (assault gunboat):
Length: 10 meters
Maximum speed: 1,050 km/h
Engine unit: Twin Cygnus Line ion engines
Hyperdrive: Cygnus HD7 hyperdrive motivator
Shielding: Novaldex shield system
Armament: 2 T&B laser cannons.
2 Borstel ion cannons.
2 SFS warhead launchers (5 concussion missiles or 4 proton torpedos each)
Crew: Pilot
Cargo: 100 kilograms
The Cygnus Spaceworks Alpha-class Xg-1 Star Wing, commonly referred to as the assault gunboat, was one of the Galactic Empire's first general deployment starfighter to be equipped with shields and a hyperdrive.
Although it was not a particularly fast ship, it had a decent level of maneuverability as well as strong shields and powerful weaponry for its class. Its armament consisted of two laser cannons, two ion cannons, and a pair of projectile launchers with a standard payload of 16 concussion missiles.
The Star Wing allowed for the Empire to conduct assault missions without the need of a Star Destroyer or other carrier. It proved very useful in minor attacks on space stations and platforms, and also served in a reconnaisance capacity.
XM-1 Nova Wing (Missile Boat):
Length: 10 meters
Maximum speed: 1,400km/h (doubles to 2,800 with SLAM engaged, SLAM drains laser power)
Engine unit: Twin Cygnus ion engines
Hyperdrive: Cygnus HD8 hyperdrive motivator
Shielding: Novaldex shield system
Armament: 1 T&B laser cannon.
2 SFS warhead launchers (10 concussion missiles, 8 proton torpedos, 6 heavy rockets, 3 space bombs each)

Crew: Pilot
Cargo: 75 kilograms
The Nova Wing was designed by Grand Admiral Thrawn, and it is believed to be based upon the older, more common Alpha-class Xg-1 Star Wing. Unlike many space superiority fighters, the missile boat was designed to utilize projectile weaponry as its primary armament. To compensate for its weakness in dogfighting, it was equipped with a system known as the SubLight Acceleration Motor, or "SLAM."
The missile boat's armament consisted of a single laser cannon, two advanced concussion missile launchers capable of holding 40 missiles, two additional projectile launchers which could also be equipped with concussion missiles or a variety of other warheads, and an optional tractor beam projector. The XM-1 was also equipped with a revolutionary SLAM overdrive system that could double the ship's already impressive speed, but only by rapidly draining energy from its laser cannon.
Because of the fact that this fighter was designed as a missile carrier, it lacked primary firepower, only wielding one laser cannon. To balance this, the missile boat had shields stronger than the X-wing and an overpowering secondary capacity. In addition, the laser cannon had an unusually fast recharge rate compared to other starfighter lasers.
